Coating technique

D-Coat’s diamond-coating method is based on a process known as “hot-filament CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)”. In this technique, the necessary gases in the process are pyrolyzed by an excitation source (a heated filament) in a vacuum atmosphere, while the material that is to be precipitated (diamond) is deposited on the article that you wish to coat.

Along with the diamond-coating itself, the bonding that holds the coating to the tool has a significant influence on the quality of the coating overall. Choosing the right substrate – and properly pre-treating its surface prior to coating – play key roles in how well the diamond layer adheres to a tool. Diamond coating is usually carried out on carbide substrates (list as a .PDF), but in principle the process can also be carried out on a range of other materials.
